Tavernelle lies on the Tavarone river, in the heart of historic northern Tuscany, set against a backdrop of the Tuscan-Emilian Appenine National Park. The village boasts a bar, a restaurant/pizzeria, a butchers shop and grocery store. The river offers swimming in cold rock pools, sunning and scrambling upstream through the pools, eddies and falls. Summer weekends bring heightened activity in the village. Al fresco dining reaches a climax during the annual Festa della Trota, held on the first weekend in August. The village is transformed into a medieval marketplace, and feasting takes place noon and evening in the village park. Visitors and locals alike throng to this annual festa to sample the best local fare and wine, trout, lamb, pastas and tortas. Tavernelle is close to the Cinque Terre, Florence, Pisa, Lucca and La Spezia. The Gulf of Poets and the beautiful Lerici are thirty minutes away. |
